about
In January of 2019 my friends lost their 3 year old daughter, Abby, in a tragic accident. In February/March of last year Amanda asked me if I would write a song to honour Abby. Ryan and Amanda are two of the kindest and most wonderful people I’ve ever met; it was so important to me to be able to help in some small way and to write something that would honour the vibrant and special little girl that she was.
Over the next 11 months I wrote upwards of 15 different songs; all different and all failing to capture the feeling that I was looking for. In January of this year my family and I went to Mexico for Christmas break. It was the 1 year anniversary of Abby's passing; I hadn’t come up with anything that I was really proud of and I was starting to feel like I would never find the right message or words to tell a story this important. We were in the ocean for hours and hours each day while we were there; to the point where my wife and I noticed that we could feel the push and pull of the ocean/waves hours later when we tried to sleep at night. I would close my eyes and feel the gentle swaying motion reminding me of the waves and the current from earlier in the day.
As I was laying there trying to fall asleep one night I pulled out my notebook and started to weave Abby’s story and that metaphor together. The waves were gone but I could still feel them as though they had never left; just like the memories and feelings that Abby left behind that mean so much to so many people.
100% of every download will go toward “Danica and Abby’s Village” to support local initiatives in Ryan and Amanda’s community. The minimum download price is set at $1; or you can choose to give more to this wonderful initiative.
lyrics
Steps we planned
Cast in the sand
Drift to waters black
A light done too soon
Reflecting the moon
I love you there and back
I close my eyes
Feel the rolling tide
I close my eyes
Feel the rolling tide
Each memory
like sand in my sheets
Keeps me awake
A song in my head
The words that you said
are all that I can take
Just like the wind on my skin
I feel it again
Rolling wave after wave
